Federal timber restrictions, interregional spillovers, and the impact on US softwood markets

چکیده
An econometric model of the US softwood lumber and timber markets is estimated and used to simulate the price, trade, and welfare effects of reductions in federal timber sales in the western US commencing in the late 1980s. Results indicate that the timber sale reductions increased lumber prices by roughly 15 percent in the mid-1990s. Lumber consumers were the unambiguous losers from the policy, while lumber and timber producers were net welfare gainers as the quantity-induced losses to western lumber producers were more than offset by price increases and quantity gains to southern US and Canadian lumber producers and timber producers in all regions. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. The Effect of Changing Interregional Relationships on Employment Changes: A Decomposition Analysis in Two-Regional Input- Output Model
According to the regional economic literature, interregional communication can play an important role in production, followed by production-related variables such as employment. For this reason, changing (strengthening or weakening) inter-regional communication can lead to changes in production and employment in the regions. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the change of...
متن کاملEstimating Regional Softwood Lumber Supply in the United States Using Seemingly Unrelated Regression
In this article, we present estimates of regional softwood lumber supply functions in the United States using annual time series data for 1959 to 2009. Seemingly unrelated regression is used in a profit maximization framework to model softwood lumber supply as a function of lumber and stumpage prices, lagged supply, wage rate, and interest rate for the eastern and western United States. The eff...
متن کاملThe Patterns of Pulpwood Trade within the US South
The Southern timber market is the major source of both softwood and hardwood pulpwood in the US. In 1997, three-fourths of total US pulpwood production was produced in the region. The locations of pulpmills and fiber sources determine the patterns of pulpwood trade between the states. Prediction of trade is important for understanding subregional pulpwood markets in the US South and for timber ...
متن کاملTbat This Could Manifest Itself through Changing Demand or Supply Price Elasticities. Consider Using the Timber Structural Change in Southern Softwood Stumpage Markets
The potential for structural change in southern stumpage market models has impacts on not only our basic understanding of those markets, but also on harvest, inventory and price projections, and related policy. In this paper, we test for structural change in both sawtimber and pulpwood softwood stumpage markets in the U.S. South over the period 19501994. Test results strongly reject structural ...
